A dissertation submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements of a Master of Urban Planning (Professional) degree, at The University of Auckland 2023. This research project, aims to identify opportunities within Auckland's current Special Character planning frameworks and special character environments to allow for higher-density living while preserving the tangible and intangible value generated by the city's historic townscapes. Through precedents generated by international approaches and detailed site analysis of Birkenhead Special Character Areas, this research project will evaluate the fundamental tensions between intensification and historic townscapes but also illuminate the creative planning opportunities that could serve both viewpoints.
